Messy military lawyer. Today’s public service announcement involves when you get a phone call or you get a text message from that gal that you hooked up with months ago.
It’s not her. I mean, it may be her voice, but it’s the cops. And if she’s trying to tell you something like, I just need some closure, I just need you to apologize for what you did, it’s the cops. It may be her voice, it’s the cops. This is what’s known as a pretext phone call or a pretext text message. She’s being told what to say by the police because she’s already gone to them and she’s already claimed that you assaulted her. Do not give her closure. Do not apologize. You could say something very simple in response, that was not my experience.
Don’t apologize.
You may be tempted to start to apologize because you’re thinking, oh, if I’m nice, if I deflect, if I appease her, maybe she won’t go to the cops, and that won’t become my reality. I’m here to tell you, it’s already your reality. You just haven’t been called in yet. She’s already gone to the cops. If somebody that you hooked up with a long time ago is trying to get you to apologize, that was not my experience and the call and the messaging and go get to a lawyer. Messy military lawyer.
