What is an Administrative Separation Board for Misconduct?

An administrative separation board is convened by the senior Officer on the base to decide whether or not misconduct occurred, and if misconduct occurred, how that person should be made to leave the service if at all.
That’s known as the characterization of service. A characterization of service will decide for that member what benefits, if any, they get to have as a result of the time that they spent in their enlistment.

For those members that have served a number of years and have looked forward to retirement, it will also decide whether or not they get to keep any of those benefits that they have been working toward including lifelong medical and the payment of the retirement over the course of their lifetime.
